Untu is a project combining extreme metal with Javanese gamelan. The group was first created at California Institute of the Arts in 2014. Since that time, the group reformed in 2022 in Indonesia for a performance at the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival.
Untu’s debut release, “Rats of Oran,” is a concept album based on Albert Camus’s seminal novel “La Peste” (The Plague). It features Jessika Kenney’s extraordinary sindenmorph vocals, combining traditional Javanese vocal style with screaming and electronics.
