Untu is a progressive death-thrash band from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, fusing Javanese gamelan with extreme metal. Drawing on Indonesian mythology, existentialist philosophy, and old-school aggression, Untu explores themes of fate, ritual, and futility.
Originally formed in 2015 as a large gamelan ensemble at CalArts, Untu released Rats of Oran (2019) in collaboration with vocalist/composer Jessika Kenney. After a one-off reunion performance at Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival in 2022, the project re-emerged in 2025 with a leaner, more aggressive format.
